EN3 quality controlled ocean data: Data sources and acknowledgements

Data sources and acknowledgements

WOD05

Much of the data were obtained from the World Ocean Database '05 (WOD05; Boyer et al. 2006). The data were downloaded from http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/OC5/WOD05/pr_wod05.html.

GTSPP

From 1990 the WOD05 data are supplemented with profiles collected by the Global Temperature and Salinity Profile Project (GTSPP; Operational Oceanography Group: Global Temperature-Salinity Profile Program. June 2006. U.S. Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Oceanographic Data Center, Silver Spring, Maryland, 20910. May 2009 onwards, http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/GTSPP/).

Argo

From 1999 Argo data downloaded from the global data assembly centres (Coriolis or USGODAE) are used. Argo data were collected and made freely available by the International Argo Project and the national initiatives that contribute to it (http://www.argo.net). Argo is a pilot programme of the Global Ocean Observing System.

ASBO data

Additional Arctic data spanning from 1950 to the current decade were included in EN3_v2a. The data were collated as part of the Arctic Synoptic Basin-wide Observations (ASBO) project by Takamasa Tsubouchi at NOCS (see the NOCS ASBO webpages). This dataset is a collection of profiles from other sources. These are:
  • Hydrobase (http://www.whoi.edu/science/PO/hydrobase/) - Curry (2001).
  • Beaufort gyre experiment - The data were collected and made available by the Beaufort Gyre Exploration Program based at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (http://www.whoi.edu/beaufortgyre/).
  • North Pole Environmental Observatory (NPEO; http://psc.apl.washington.edu/northpole) - NSF Grants OPP-9910305, OPP-0352754, and ARC-0634226. For further information, please contact Dr. James Morison (morison@apl.washington.edu; +1 (206) 543-1394), Dr. Michael Steele (mas@apl.washington.edu; +1 (206) 543-6586), Roger Andersen (roger@apl.washington.edu; +1 (206) 543-1258) at Polar Science Center, Applied Physics Lab, University of Washington, 1013 NE 40th, Seattle, WA 98105-6698 USA; FAX +1 (206) 616-3142.
  • Freshwater switchyard of the Arctic project - M. Steele, W. Smethie, and P. Schlosser, CTD data from the Arctic Switchyard Project, Office of Polar Programs, National Science Foundation: http://psc.apl.washington.edu/switchyard/.
  • Nansen and Amundsen Basins Observational System (NABOS), Canadian Basin Observational System (CABOS) (http://nabos.iarc.uaf.edu/).
  • Physical and Chemical Properties from Selected Expeditions in the Arctic Ocean (Swift 2002; http://nsidc.org/data/arcss077.html).
Other data are included in the ASBO dataset, but not used for EN3: WOD01 data are not used since WOD05 is already incorporated in EN3. Hydrochemical atlas of the Arctic ocean data are not used since these do not have temperature and salinity information.

Other acknowledgements

The dataset makes use of the results of quality control procedures that use altimeter data developed by Stephanie Guinehut, who also provided advice on the interpretation of the results. The quality control results were obtained from ftp://ftp.ifremer.fr/ifremer/argo/etc/argo-ast9-item13-AltimeterComparison/. The technique is described in Guinehut et al. (2009).

Introduction

This page contains the data sources and acknowledgements for EN3_v2a. Data were downloaded during May/June 2009. Updates are then produced each month using new data obtained from GTSPP and Argo.
